The Des Moines Social Club is officially open! After more than 4,000 people attended the Grand Opening Party on May 10, the non-profit is ramping up programming and classes in a wide variety of arts disciplines. Bitch is a singer who plays electric violin, bass, ukulele and keytar. Born Karen Mould, this artist started studying classical violin at 4, and later expanded her musical horizons by studying fiddling with Andrew Bird. Her band, Bitch and Animal, toured with Ani Difranco in the U.S. and Europe and released two albums on Difranco’s label, Righteous Babe Records.

Actors’ Dojo is a place for actors to work together on their craft and instrument. The goal is to establish an ensemble work ethic that pushes members to do their best work and find new avenues of creativity. The spring section will be built around a survey of Laban and Viewpoints exercises to expand performance vocabulary. Each week will include a vocal and physical exercise as well as text and scene work.

A unique monthly vocal seminar for singers of all ages and skill levels, covering singing technique. Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga Class taught in the traditional, teacher-led style. This 1.5-hr sequence moves in a vinyasa flow style through fundamental standing poses, deep seated stretches and twists, heartopeners, inversions and centering pranayama work. All connected by continuous breath and flowing transitions. The first class will be an Introduction to Ashtanga. All students welcome. This six-week session is for students who have never tried ATS® Belly Dance or for advanced students who want to refine their foundational moves. In Level 2 we will add to and expand upon the foundation moves that were learned in level 1 by layering, levels, new moves, new zill patterns, and performance techniques that will really get students dancing. Students will need to have completed two sessions of level 1 or have the consent of the instructor to enter level 2. Level 2 contains twelve weeks of instruction, which will be held in two six-week sessions. All classes are taught by a certified instructor and FCBD® Sister Studio.

Des Moines Fire Jam is a community of local fire dancers and spinners. Fire Jam provides a safe and supportive environment to explore the fire flow arts. Painting with Acrylics

Students will learn fundamental techniques of acrylic painting. Any skill level can benefit from this class, from beginner to advanced. Students will learn techniques using the brush and other tools to apply paint, as well as how to mix and use color. By the end of the class students will have completed a painting based on the subject matter and style of their choosing.

Charcoal Drawing

Have you ever wanted to learn how to draw? Are you OK with getting your hands dirty? This 10 week class will introduce you to basic drawing concepts and techniques with a focus on the use of charcoals and related mediums. Taught by local artist, Robert Reeves, you will learn to draw from observation using simple objects, complex still life arrangements, and live models. Open to all experience levels.

Advanced Figure Drawing

A bi-weekly life drawing session with experienced models. The aim of this workshop is to provide the experienced artist with time and space to develop their skills and techniques in life drawing. Using film cameras, students will learn to take stunning images of any subject in any situation. Hip Hop is a blend of today’s high-energy “street style” movement. Typically performed to “popular urban music,” this style of dance has been very sought after by teens, preteens and the “young at heart.” The style boasts that everyone is capable of taking part and having fun! Sometimes percussive and other times it incorporates “house or club” dancing, making Hip Hop the latest dance phenomenon. Recommended for ages 5 and up.

The Young Artist Studio is a total hands on art experience for young children to not only further their artistic skills but to also gain self confidence through their creative expression. We believe in the “I CAN” method of learning where the most important skills a child can carry on with them is the ability “TO THINK” and the confidence “TO DO.” Students will learn the basic elements of design by studying famous artists and their techniques. They will draw, paint and create sculptures using various mediums.
