I’ve got a ton of amazing new things to share today! It’ll start to give you a better picture of all the awesome programs that will be in the Firehouse when we open its doors. But we can’t do that until we sell all of our bricks! You can buy yours here.

Cup O’ Kryptonite — a 10-year Des Moines institution — is moving in, and this comic book and coffee shop mashup will be the nerdiest, most caffeinated place in town.

The rumors you hear about MALO are true. It’s the latest restaurant creation from Orchestrate Hospitality — the brains behind Zombie Burger, Centro and other superb spots. This “Nuevo Latino” restaurant will serve Cuban, Mexican, Tex-Mex and South American-style dishes. And don’t gorget MALO’s Hemingway rum bar, Texas whiskey & beer bar and Mexican margarita bar!

The Handball Court is original to the Firehouse in 1937, and this amazing 850-sqare-foot space will be home to the programs you see listed below.



Emerging Artist Pop-Up Galleries
The DMSC will provide alternative spaces for artists across all mediums to showcase their work. In addition to within the Handball Court, gallery space will be offered on a 20-foot-tall viaduct wall, high-ceilinged vestibules and various walls around the campus.
Occurrence: Quarterly, Beginning March 2014

Screen It! Local Movie Showcases
The Handball Court will provide a setting for intimate screenings of films from local filmmakers — which will include Q&A sessions whenever possible.

Opera Eight
Opera Eight is a performance-oriented group that hosts monthly salons – casual performances in which singers can try out new material, meet other singers, and enjoy the craft. Singers choose their repertoire based on each salon’s theme, and audience members participate in trivia contests based around that theme.
Occurrence: Quarterly, Beginning March 2014

Projection Mapping
Both local and national artists will introduce Des Moines to the growing new media art form of projection mapping, in which video projections interact with 3D objects to bring them to life.
Occurrence: Quarterly, Beginning Summer 2014 

Aerial Fabric Classes
From the trapeze to the aerial hoop and aerial fabric, there’s no better way to have fun, get fit, and improve your coordination. No experience is necessary — classes are individualized to your needs and strengths.

Handball Installations
Working in a variety of mediums, both local and national artists will create site-specific installations in the Handball Court.
Occurrence: Quarterly, Beginning Spring 2014

Song Swap
Two local bands/musicians are paired together for a unique show that features original sets from each artist — but additionally a requirement that each act covers two of the other’s songs.
Occurrence: Monthly, Beginning Spring 2014

Story Mob
Story Mob is similar to a flash mob: A small crowd of people gather, and a story breaks out. 5-minute stories. 4 times per year. 3 guest judges. 2 cash prizes. And 1 story prop that will serve as the narrative theme during the Open Mob (open mic) session.

Adult Circus
Circus classes are the ideal addition to your fitness plan that can invigorate your routine. Perfect for adults of all ages and fitness levels — beginners are welcome. Taught by full-time, Des Moines-based circus performer Laura Ernst.

Page 2 Stage
Page 2 Stage is the Des Moines Social Club’s monthly free-play reading series. Each month features a rehearsed reading of a great play, which can range from being brand new, an obscure old find or something simply new to Des Moines.

Screen Test
This quarterly event features a local musician or band paired up with a local artist of a different medium (visual arts, photography, dance, etc.) to present a unique performance specific to that night.

Saturday Morning Cartoons
The entire family is welcome for these 3-hour sessions of family driven activities — including Dance Baby Dance (our toddler dance party); Mommy/Daddy and me cooking classes in our culinary school and other classes for families (like yoga, hooping or painting). Saturday Morning Cartoons includes the option of a brunch buffet and beverages for adults and kids. Activities will vary week to week.

Parties at 50
Themed intimate parties designed and executed by local artists, musicians, chefs, and taste-makers.
