Hi, I'm Maari, the DMSC intern.
I absolutely love Des Moines. And my job. In a way, they’re really just one and the same. As an intern for the Des Moines Social Club (and a resident of this lovely city), it’s my duty to genuinely care for the well being of this modest little Midwest spot. It just wouldn’t work if I despised this place. And for a very brief, fleeting moment—I did.
I remember driving down I-35 from Minnesota (my hometown) for the first time on my way to college (Drake) and seeing Des Moines’ “skyline.” OK, there’s really no such thing. With the exception of one or two buildings that stretch somewhat into the sky, it’s pretty wimpy. I couldn’t believe that this is where I would be spending my next four years. But then I quickly learned that Des Moines has so much more to offer than just tall buildings. We have culture, art, passion, variety, character, history, loyalty, kindness, quaintness and so much more that big cities just can’t beat. This city and the Social Club have so much potential to grow, to change and to improve where we live. To be part of that growth is so exciting and so rewarding.
I always thought that when I graduated, I was going to get out of here. I was going to move to a big city—to Chicago or even New York. But after living in DSM for almost four years now, I’ve learned to love it. And my internship at Des Moines Social Club is making me love it even more. Hope to see you all there—and no excuses—YOU ARE A MEMBER!
