DAWSON HOLLOW

Missouri native Dawson Hollow is an indie-folk band based out of the Ozark Mountains. Their music encompasses the nostalgia of folk while channeling the urgent and intoxicating energy of indie-rock. In 2017 they completed a crowd-funded Kickstarter campaign raising an impressive $96,000 for their debut record. The album was produced by San Diego native, Ryan Poole, and mixed by Grammy award-winner and Nashville-based producer/mixer, Ryan Hewitt. The band is now signed with Red Letter Management Group.

Debut Album “Boy Of My Youth” released in January of 2018. Singles “Lonesome Wolf” and “Take Me There” released in October and November of 2017.

Jinnouchi Power

“Jinn” (tactile spirits, demons, or supernatural creatures, soul) “Ouchi” (your home, inside, depression) “Power” (supply, to move or travel with great speed or force.)

Jinnouchi Power is the rock band interpretation of Jinnouchi Power Electric Company’s sonic core belief system. The rock band itself is deployed to do several live “product demonstrations” in which this core message is sonically received.

This crux is: Find the Jinnouchi that powers the world, and make it free.

The NOLA Jazz Band’s monthly “New Orleans Jazz Party” occurs every First Friday of the month at The Basement, usually to a packed house.

All band members have a common love for the sound and “feel” of both traditional and current New Orleans and roots blues music – real, gutsy, raw, heartfelt, and entertaining. They also find joy in their music and love performing together, having fun, and entertaining their audiences.

The NOLA Jazz Band has played alongside a number of well-known traditional jazz and music groups this past year including Davina & the Vagabonds, Sony recording artist trumpet player and singer Bria Skonberg, and Dom Flemons of The Carolina Chocolate Drops.

Individual band members have also shared the stage with Vincent Gardner, Maynard Ferguson, Benny Goodman, Kurt Elling, and many other well know jazz artists during their careers. NOLA Jazz Band members have also been inducted into the Iowa Jazz Hall of Fame, and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

CD’s are available at live shows, online at iTunes and CD Baby, on their website, as well as streaming on Spotify.

About the Artist: Natalie gets a little too excited about vegetables, but it hasn’t always been that way. After a childhood of eating very few vegetables, she gave up meat at 18 and suddenly had to learn how to cook (and like) them. Through a lot of trial and error, she taught herself to cook healthy food on a college budget, and has since cooked extensively with vegetables and learned how to make them delicious. Instead of worrying about fad diets or constantly changing health advice, Natalie’s approach teaches you how to add more fruits, vegetables and whole grains to your diet. Her classes will help you be the person you believed you were when you bought all that produce.

BITCHES OF THE SUN

Bitches of the Sun is an Oregon based trio founded in winter of 2017 by Willamette Week award winning vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Joshua Davis. After the session saxophonist made his way to the Pacific Northwest from Chicago, Illinois he decided to push his musical boundary and play his hand at being a front-man. In efforts to find a refreshing new sound that embodied traditional rock elements he was introduced to bassist Nick Wright and drummer Seth Shaler. Together this powerhouse has an extensive resume of individual features and group performances with the likes of Wyclef Jean, Mac Miller, Chance the Rapper and Buddy Guy. Described by its loyal fan base as “Portland’s rock band” the trio uses it’s diverse musical background to deliver a large selection of body shaking grooves wrapped in emotionally complex arrangements guaranteed to get everyone on the dance floor.

Every performance gifts the audience with unforgettable moments that can only be envied by those who missed out. And with the release of their 2018 self-titled Bitches of the Sun EP they are proving to be a force of limitless growth and longevity.

Supporting acts TBA.

As swing dancers, we often learn how to dance at those medium tempos quite well… HOWEVER, when the music slows down of speeds up, we decide sit it out. We want to show you how to have fun no matter the speed of the song. Don’t sit down for the fast or slow songs because you aren’t sure what to do anymore! Join us to practice how to handle fast and slow swing dance tempos.

Bourbon didn’t come into the world fully formed, it was a long evolutionary process.  We will explore the roots of America’s native spirit, looking briefly at some of the most important people in the history of the spirit. Once we’ve learned about the history of bourbon, we’ll talk about how bourbon made and who makes it.  Considering the current bourbon boom we’ll also talk about bourbon’s expansion and the role of the craft distiller.

Before we get to actually taste our bourbon, we’ll learn a little bit about reading a bourbon label – what does it mean to be produced, what’s so special about Lawrenceburg, IN, and why is Templeton such a controversial brand? Finally, we get to the most important part of any discussion of bourbon, the tasting!  No opinions are wrong, and all feedback is welcome.  Do you taste caramel? Vanilla?  Or just alcohol?  A fun and informative class that gives you whiskey at the end is just what the doctor ordered in the midst of America’s bourbon boom!

About the Artist: Michael Kelly is an Iowa native, Army veteran, and self-taught bourbon explorer. Following his first trip to Bourbon country in 2017, in which he toured all the distilleries on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, Michael’s passion for the history, quality, flavor and people of whiskey continues to grow. Michael has since toured 43 distilleries in 6 states and has an expanding bourbon collection of over 275 different bottles. Among his favorite libations are: Stagg Jr, Weller Antique 107. A former Cyclone, Michael lives in Des Moines with his lovely and patient wife Vanessa and super-dog, Kal-El.

MARY OCHER + YOUR GOVERNMENT

Mary Ocher returns with two drummers! Fresh off the recording of a new album and touring over 20 countries with the much celebrated “The West Against The People” and its companion release “Faust Studio Sessions and Other Recordings”. Mary Ocher + Your Government will be hitting the East Coast, Midwest, parts of Canada and The South with a spectacular blend of audio-visual components, synthesizers and heaps of percussion.

Over the past decade Mary has been persistently creating passionate, uncompromising work, raw, thought provoking, socially and creatively pushing against the current, dealing with subjects of authority, identity and conflict. Her work is as enchanting as it is polarizing, ranging from traditional folk to raw 60s garage, ambient with ethereal vocals and abstract synths, to experimental pop with African and South American rhythms.

“The West Against The People” was released on Hans Joachim Irmler’s label Klangbad (of Krautrock pioneers Faust). It features collaborations with elusive legends Die Tödliche Doris and Felix Kubin and an essay elaborating on the themes of the album and analyzing the current sociopolitical climate*. The additional 10″ vinyl “Faust Studio Sessions and Other Recordings” is a co-release of Klangbad with Swedish label Sing A Song Fighter. A special tape edition was released on the US label Related Records. Her previous solo release was produced by Canadian Psych Rock&Roll guru King Khan.

This class is an interactive experience that will teach you how to make 5 different vegetable dishes. We will make the foods, then eat them! Come hungry, this will be a full meal. Wine is provided.

Menu:

– cauliflower fried rice
– cowboy caviar
– zucchini pizza boats
– breaded cauliflower
– bruschetta

About the Artist: Natalie gets a little too excited about vegetables, but it hasn’t always been that way. After a childhood of eating very few vegetables, she gave up meat at 18 and suddenly had to learn how to cook (and like) them. Through a lot of trial and error, she taught herself to cook healthy food on a college budget and has since cooked extensively with vegetables and learned how to make them delicious. Instead of worrying about fad diets or constantly changing health advice, Natalie’s approach teaches you how to add more fruits, vegetables and whole grains to your diet. Her classes will help you be the person you believed you were when you bought all that produce.

Des Moines Social Club

1930s Partner Charleston, a direct descendant of the well-known 1920s Charleston, is largely composed of kick-steps and commonly danced in conjunction with Lindy Hop and East Coast Swing. If you’re wanting to expand your swing vocabulary and add versatility to your dance, this is the perfect class to accomplish it! If you do not have Lindy or East Coast experience, you can still begin here and add them later. No partner is required to take the class.

About the Artists: Travis & Jill are jitterbugs from Central Iowa who LOVE swing and the essence of the era in which it was born. They met in 2008, began dancing together shortly after, and have been cuttin’ a rug ever since. They specialize in Lindy Hop, East Coast, Charleston, Solo Jazz, Shag & Aerials. Travis & Jill enjoy dancing BIG and creating new dance moves each time they take to the floor.

The Belgardes compete occasionally in the Midwest. Most recently, they placed 2nd in the Showcase Competition and 2nd in the Fast Dance Battle Contest at Heartland Swing Festival (April 2017). Travis & Jill have been ambassadors of swing in Central Iowa by performing and teaching new dancers in Des Moines. They look forward to teaching new dancers and expanding the population of jitterbugs in the Midwest!
