View from the Bridge comes timelily to Des Moines. As one of Pulitzer Prize-winner Arthur Miller’s most respected works, View from the Bridge is concerned with illegal immigration, a poignant topic in 2018.

View from the Bridge

Set in 1950s New York in the shadow of the Brooklyn Bridge, this searing and timely modern tragedy follows Eddie Carbone and his wife Beatrice, who shelter Beatrice’s orphaned niece Catherine as she studies to become a stenographer – at least, until two of Beatrice’s male cousins from Italy move in. Illegal immigration, unsanctioned love affairs, and the liberty to pursue individual happiness all come under fire; and before it is over, the entire immigrant neighborhood will be hurt in unimaginable climax. Arthur Miller‘s unequaled ability to show the triumphs and pitfalls of the common man shine through clearly: loyalty to community and family, fear of the unfamiliar, and the need to recognize, understand, and control our impulsive urges.

Performances on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights in the Kum & Go Theater.

NOLA Jazz PosterThe NOLA Jazz Bands monthly “New Orleans Jazz Party” occurs every First Friday of the month at “The Basement” many times playing to a packed house.  Join us this month for a celebration of NOLA’s 3 year anniversary!

All band members have a common love for the sound and “feel” of both traditional and current New Orleans and roots blues music – real, gutsy, raw, heartfelt, and entertaining. They also find joy in their music and love performing together, having fun, and entertaining their audiences.

The NOLA Jazz Band has played alongside a number of well-known traditional jazz and music groups this past year including Davina & the Vagabonds, Sony recording artist trumpet player and singer Bria Skonberg, and Dom Flemons of The Carolina Chocolate Drops.

Individual band members have also shared the stage with Vincent Gardner, Maynard Ferguson, Benny Goodman, Kurt Elling, and many other well know jazz artists during their careers. NOLA Jazz Band members have also been inducted into the Iowa Jazz Hall of Fame, and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The band had a busy 2016 summer festival schedule playing festivals across the Midwest and Central US, and also played for many private functions across Central Iowa. Appreciative audiences, fellow musicians, promoters and positive word of mouth has created a busy performance schedule and continued demand for their music as they build their reputation in the Midwest, regionally and across the US.

To commemorate their first year full year together they released their first album in March, 2016 – NOLA Jazz Band Vol. 1 “Genesis – Live from the ARK”. CD’s are available at live shows, online at iTunes and CD Baby, on their website, as well as streaming on Spotify.

The Host Country

IPR Studio One Underground with The Host Country! March 8th at 7pm – admission is FREE.

In 2014, The Host Country released their full length debut album, “Walk Away”. Since then, they were working hard at writing, recording, and debuting their new self-titled album released in September 2017. It is an exploration of sounds; The Host Country’s genre experimentation puts them in a category of their own. While their music is something that must be heard to truly understand, imagine a fusion of folk, rock, blues, a mix of hard and soft, all combined with hauntingly passionate chord shifts. Lyrically, the music is filled with deep emotions. Dual writing credits between Ty Wistrand & Diana Weishaar put forth versatile songs that are evocative, often taking listeners down deeply personal paths. Ty (guitar/vox), Diana (keys/vox), Tom (bass), Ethan (drums), and newly added member Michael Lovan (guitar) are storytellers and fan favorites for many reasons, but their dedication to the audience is what keeps them coming back for more. For a preview, they can be found on iTunes, Spotify, Bandcamp, or at their website www.thehostcountry.com.

Nutria

The Basement // 5:30 PM // $10

Named after the infamous South Louisiana swamp rat, Nutria performs genre-bending contemporary jazz compositions with an emphasis on collective improvisation. The trio’s music creatively explores jazz, chamber music, and traditional music of the African diaspora and Eastern Europe, as well as the avant-garde, while staying true to New Orleans jazz and groove traditions.

“Showing a clear strategic intelligence and inventiveness and a substantial depth of artistic resourcefulness” (No Depression magazine), Nutria has toured throughout the United States playing art centers, jazz clubs and dive bars. In 2017, they performed on the Millennium Stage at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. In 2016, they were commissioned by the New Orleans-based Marigny Opera Ballet to compose “Wary Heat,” a new ballet that was premiered in February 2017 and reprised in January 2018.

Nutria was formed in New Orleans in 2014 while its members were graduate students in the renowned jazz studies program at the University of New Orleans and active in different corners of the local music scene. Their sound reflects a diversity of influences yet a deep commitment to the jazz idiom.

The members of Nutria have performed with a wide array of leading talents in New Orleans and around the world, including Ed Petersen, the Revelers, Mahmoud Chouki, Nduduzo Makhathini, Sarah Quintana, and local favorites Los Po-boy-citos. Nutria has performed at venues such as the Kennedy Center (Washington, DC), the New Orleans Museum of Art, the New Orleans Jazz Museum, Twins Jazz Club (DC), Chris’ Jazz Cafe (Philadelphia), the Jazz Gallery (Milwaukee), the Chatterbox Jazz Club (Indianapolis), and Elastic Arts (Chicago).

Bo Ramsey

BO RAMSEY

Bo Ramsey, who was born and raised in Burlington, Iowa, and has lived in Iowa City the past few decades, has carved out a unique career for 40 years. And it shows not one sign of slowing down. He has been involved in enough high-profile and low-down endeavors to have become somewhat of a legend, but a legend who still hides from the spotlights and leans away from stardom. Maybe that’s because Ramsey has mystifyingly maintained a devotion to the music side of the music business, and lets everything else fall by the side. Naturally, an all-instrumental album was just a matter of time. After buying the Harmony guitar, a series of inspirations began to land. First were some musical ideas that got recorded on Ramsey’s phone, and then a band of like-minded musicians began to converge, and get mixed and matched. Finally drummer JT Bates and bassist Marty Christensen found themselves together in Bo Ramsey’s kitchen with engineer Adam Krinsky. Of course, it had to be in the kitchen because that’s where the idea was born and that’s where it had to come to life. Still, the emotional side of the music had to emerge before “the keepers” started being recorded. That is exactly what happened in the two days the players were together in that Iowa kitchen. With Alex Ramsey chiming in on three tracks by way of Minnesota, adding lush living-room piano and perfectly hushed basement keyboards. . . For those who might recognize Bo Ramsey by his association with artists like Lucinda Williams, Greg Brown, Kevin Gordon, Pieta Brown, Charlie Parr and others, his new music is the perfect introduction to someone who always listens and plays with his own sonic vision in full motion . So not surprisingly, the list of Ramsey’s accolades is long: including Grammy-Award Winning Guitar Player, 2 Time Grammy Nominated Producer, Iowa Rock & Roll Hall of Famer and Iowa Blues Hall of Famer. And if there were other Iowa halls of fame he would no doubt be in them too. But above all, Ramsey is a proud card-carrying member of his own hall of fame, which is the one where he chases the sounds in his head and his heart. He is always looking for a way to wrestle them into a recording so he can share that love of music with friends and strangers alike. WILDWOOD CALLING is an album for the ages, and the perfect calling card for anyone with an interest in hearing the past, the present and the future rolled into one. Long may Bo Ramsey run.

– Bill Bentley. July 2016.

ERIK KOSKINEN

Minnesota-based singer and songwriter Erik Koskinen’s new EP Cruising Paradise features six songs that were recorded over the past few years but never planned to be released until now. “I’ve been working on all kinds of projects the past few years and have written a lot of new songs,” says Koskinen. “But these six seemed to have a thread all the way through, a story from song one to song six.”

The title, “Cruising Paradise,” was an homage to Sam Shepard, the actor and writer who died earlier this year. “Shepard’s death is a significant loss to me. This has been a year where we’ve lost giants. Pioneers in literature and music are gone. Who’s gonna step up and fill the vacuum?”

Tom Garneau recorded the first single from the EP, “Broke Down,” at Real-Phonic Studios in the summer of 2016. Guitarists Mike LeBeau and Paul Bergen, bassist Steve Garrington, and drummer JT Bates are featured on the track and video available on YouTube: https://youtu.be/pD19z_ECT6k

Cruising Paradise follows Erik Koskinen’s first three albums, America Theatre, Live At the Real Phonic Radio Hour, and Keep It to Yourself, all released on Koskinen’s own label Real-Phonic Records.

Chuck MeadChuck Mead & His Grassy Knoll Boys

For the past twenty years, Chuck Mead has been at the forefront of what has come to be known as Americana Music. Raised in Lawrence, Kansas, Chuck has been a professional musician since the age of 13 playing in his parents country band and then leading several roots rock outfits in the midwest most notably the Homestead Grays. He landed on Nashville’s Lower Broadway in 1993 where he co-founded the famed ‘90s Alternative Country quintet BR5-49. The band’s seven albums, three Grammy nominations and the Country Music Association Award for Best Overseas Touring Act of 1997 built an indelible bridge between authentic American Roots music and millions of fans worldwide. Chuck has also co-produced popular tribute albums to Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, guest-lectured at Vanderbilt University, and became a staff writer at one of Nashville’s top song publishers. In 2008, he was the Musical Director/Supervisor for the Broadway/West End musical Million Dollar Quartet (which broke the record in Chicago for longest running musical) and acted in the same capacity for the CMT television show Sun Records producing all the re-recordings of classic rock n roll, country, and blues. He has released three solo works starting in 2009 with his acclaimed solo debut album, Journeyman’s Wager on the Grassy Knoll Records label, and continues tour clubs, concert halls and international Rock, Country and Rockabilly festivals with his band The Grassy Knoll Boys.  Chuck is currently working up new material for a 2018 record release and still oversees two Million Dollar Quartet productions and is developing some new theatrical stage shows.

Travis Linville

It’s a quiet confidence, an air of authority limited to only the most studied artists, a commanding irreverence woven with a thread of vulnerability. There’s something inexplicably authentic about Oklahoma’s Travis Linville, and it’s carried him from dive bars and classrooms to “The Tonight Show” and esteemed theaters and festivals across the globe.  Linville is legendary regionally for his work in the now-defunct Burtschi Brothers and for his behind-the-scenes influence—including producing John Fullbright’s first album and teaching guitar lessons to a then nine-year-old Parker Millsap. The “Oklahoma Gazette” rightly called him a “godfather of modern Oklahoma folk” and noted that his success opened doors for a state teeming with talent: a mentor and contemporary for other Oklahoma acts like Fullbright, Millsap, Turnpike Troubadours and John Moreland.A gifted instrumentalist, Linville is also known for his work as a sideman with Texas songwriter Hayes Carll, who calls him “criminally underrated.” He’s also performed with Willie Nelson, Tommy Allsup and Ryan Bingham and shared billing with Merle Haggard, Other Lives and Billy Joe Shaver, among countless others. Independently, Linville has sold 15,000 albums and played thousands of shows across his 20-plus year career, with an ever-evolving repertoire deeply rooted in songcraft, sly humor and subtlety.

Detroit

Detriot by Lisa D’Amour

In a first-ring suburb just outside a city that might be Detroit, Ben and Mary see sudden signs of life at the deserted house next door and invite their new neighbors Sharon and Kenny over for a barbecue. As the action unfolds we learn that Sharon and Kenny met at rehab, neither is employed, and they don’t own a stick of furniture. The quintessential American back-yard party turns quickly turns into something more dangerous—and filled with potential.

MarKaus

Des Moines hip hop artist MarKaus, owner of Media Fresh Records, releases his second full-length album since 2015’s White Man’s Burden.  MarKaus approaches hip hop as rebellion and revolution from a conscious rap perspective, drawing musical influence from TechN9ne, Nas, and Gucci Mane, accented with tinges of rock, soul and jazz. From growing up in Kansas City to making a new home and starting life as an entrepreneur in Des Moines, his message resonates with the public. MarKaus’ music and lyrics keep in mind the struggles of everyday people, and calls for action and change.  Read more about what MarKaus is planning for 2018 in Clay + Milk.

Halfloves mixes pop sensibilities with heady textures and space to create an emotionally charged sound.

PLAYED WITH:
Manchester Orchestra, Foxygen, Misterwives, Tokyo Police Club, Cute Is What We Aim For, We the Kings, Emery, Menomena, JEFF the Brotherhood, Cursive, Titus Andronicus, The Rocket Summer, Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s, White Rabbits, Rubblebucket, Oberhofer, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin, Generationals, etc.

Towncrier

After a 7 year hiatus Towncrier is back, bringing their brand of sharply crafted rock and roll to the stage again. Towncriers’ blend of dirty guitars, ethereal synths, and massive rhythm section amplify frontman Jerry Lorenson’s vocals to another level, making this original Iowa band a “can’t miss” act. Currently working in the studio on their next album, their Fall 2016 live show features songs from their upcoming release, as well as new mixes of fan favorites from previous albums.

Mural Makers is a mural project that brings artistic young adults together and gives them a creative place for the needs of this age: individual expression, socializing, and creative growth. This program engages youth in the joy of community service and connects the arts to the community. We will make memories as young adults work together to develop and design who they are and what they mean to community. Each artist uses their own individual strengths and talents to form together a unified collaborative piece to display in the community. Strong emphasis on developing drawing and painting skills.

Creative Geniuses is an engaging, educational, and student led art program. We serve all ages in and around the community of Des Moines. We partner with schools, community centers, and local organizations to brighten the community through art making.

NOLA Jazz PosterThe NOLA Jazz Bands monthly “New Orleans Jazz Party” occurs every First Friday of the month at “The Basement” many times playing to a packed house.

THE MAYTAGS

The Maytags are: Dustin Smith, Frank Merchlewitz, Andy Poppen, Tim Sanders, Aaron Ehrlich, Sam Mogerman, Daniel Kreipke.

“Gaining in popularity over the years, especially since the release of their newest album, The Maytags have drawn attention from many and received countless outstanding reviews. Juice Magazine commented “Fast-forward to a year later and it’s clear that that band is just wildly talented, not a wild card.” Another review, from VICE, stated “The Maytags’ music swings. It differs from all of the Des Moines’ other retro offerings by its sheer vibrancy—there’s just warmth lining every note.” These phrases are specific to the cultural geography of the singer, guitarist, and songwriter’s Des Moines, Iowa hometown, a music and arts community with a rising national profile highlighted by praise from the Talking Heads’ David Byrne and glowing explorations from Politico and The Atlantic. But Smith’s words also help evoke the Maytags’ journey to this sultry nine-song set, one that also runs through Smith’s time in New York — where studied jazz as a drummer — and the band’s recording sessions in Tennessee. Other band members have roots in St. Louis; all studied jazz, mainly in central and northern Iowa. If there can be a New South, then there can be a sound that’s Midwest Nouveau.

NOOKY JONES

What is Nooky Jones? The person you love has been out of town for weeks, and they get home tonight…

“Sophisticated, seductive and smooth neo-soul music. Brassy horns and a brassier voice. Nooky Jones is flavorful and mouth-wateringly juicy. This is Minnesota’s freshest baby-making music.” -Alex Nelson, Star Tribune, Minneapolis, MN

“…equal parts stevie wonder, d’angelo and prince and guaranteed to move both heart and booty…nooky jones has inverted that sound into an analog vibe that feels timeless.” -heavy rotation, national public radio

LILY DETAEYE

For Lily DeTaeye, there is no backup plan when it comes to her music career. A full-time student at the University of Iowa by day and full-time recording artist by night, her approach to songwriting and musicality shows that, despite her young age, she’s no stranger to the stage or studio. With a powerful, soulful voice reminiscent of Norah Jones, and a diverse musical ability spanning indie folk rock to pop she’s an absolute delight leaving her audiences reeling. Whether she’s up on stage with her guitar and band, serenading passersby at the piano, or sitting on the riverbank with her ukulele, you’ll know she’s truly something special, and you’ll always stop to listen just a little while longer.

The Christians

Twenty years ago, Pastor Paul’s church was nothing more than a modest storefront. Now he presides over a congregation of thousands, with classrooms for Sunday School, a coffee shop in the lobby, and a baptismal font as big as a swimming pool. Today should be a day of celebration. But Paul is about to preach a sermon that will shake the foundations of his church’s belief. A thought-provoking and funny play about faith in America—and the incredible challenge of institutional change. “…powerful, riveting…handles a complex and intellectual debate in a relatable way and that, more importantly, shows the human and real consequences of choices based in spirituality.” — National Catholic Reporter.

Where old dogs learn new tricks, and new dogs learn old tricks.  This ALL-AGES jam is perfect for seasoned veterans and newbies alike!  Join us with host James Biehn, owner and instructor at Central Iowa Music Lab, every third Thursday of the month.

As a young musician, James Biehn would sneak into jams across the Des Moines area, despite being underage at certain venues.  While at those jams, he developed his musical skills from tried-and-true veterans.  Now, James wants to give back in the same spirit that he once learned under, hosting this monthly all-ages jam.

Playwright Lucas Hnath takes a hard look at organized religions with The Christians. Sponsored by Craig and Betty Miller, Phil Miller, and Miller Mechanical Specialists, the Iowa Stage Theater Co. brings The Christians to the Kum & Go Theater stage.

Performances on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights in the Kum & Go Theater.

The Iowa Stage Theater Co.‘s first season at The Kum & Go Theater with Gina Gionfriddo’s Rapture, Blister, Burn.

Rapture, Blister, Burn

After grad school, Catherine and Gwen chose polar opposite paths. Catherine built a career as a rockstar academic, while Gwen built a home with her husband and children. Decades later, unfulfilled in polar opposite ways, each woman covets the other’s life, commencing a dangerous game of musical chairs—the prize being Gwen’s husband. With searing insight and trademark wit, this comedy is an unflinching look at gender politics in the wake of 20th-century feminist ideals.  “…intensely smart, immensely funny…RAPTURE more largely illuminates how hard it can be to forge both a satisfying career and a fulfilling personal life in an era that seems to demand superhuman achievement from everyone.” —NY Times.

Performances on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights in the Kum & Go Theater.

Book, Music, Lyrics & Performance by Jamie Shriner
Directed by Stefan Brün
Choreographed by Ben F. Locke
Musical Arrangements by Shelbi Albert and Jake Diggity of PET ENVY

Jamie Shriner eloped in January 2017, and her life has been sheer bliss ever since. Or has it? In Wife Material, a one-woman show starring Jamie Shriner as herself, a 25-year-old actress examines female sexuality, loneliness, love, dating, and consent with unapologetic honesty. Is it acceptable for a young married woman to admit she enjoys sex? Wife Material is an hour-long musical comedy that “dares to go where you’d never go,” featuring songs like “F***boi,” “Let’s Screw,” and “Love Myself.” The show examines a society that criticizes teenage “bad girls” for liking sex; and at the same time, hypocritically assumes married women’s sexual needs are perfectly satiated.

“In November 2016, one day before the Presidential election, I moved back into my parents’ house in Northwest Indiana after a year and a half of living in the UK with my fiancée (now husband) Tom,” said Shriner. “I struggled with the lack of physical contact and came to terms with the reality that while I, a woman, am sexual, many do not welcome me admitting that I like, let alone LOVE sex,” she added.

“Wife Material holds up a mirror and forces us to look at how girls are brought up in the US. The audience gets to laugh, but not before they think, and ultimately leave the theater to DO SOMETHING,” said Shriner.

NOLA Jazz PosterThe NOLA Jazz Bands monthly “New Orleans Jazz Party” occurs every First Friday of the month at “The Basement” many times playing to a packed house.

NOLA Jazz PosterThe NOLA Jazz Bands monthly “New Orleans Jazz Party” occurs every First Friday of the month at “The Basement” many times playing to a packed house.
