ALMA AFROBEAT

Alma Afrobeat Ensemble is set to tour the US for the fourth consecutive year. The Barcelona based band, started by native Chicagoan Aaron Feder, is presenting their fourth studio album, Monkey See, Monkey Do. This release is the natural evolution of Alma Afrobeat Ensemble’s unique brand of modern Afrobeat, and their most complete, comprehensive and eclectic work to date. While most other Afrobeat bands are going the afro-funk route, AAbE follows their own path once again, as they did with their first 3 albums. “Monkey See, Monkey Do” combines all the elements of classic Afrobeat created by Fela Kuti and Tony Allen while leaving the band’s own unique stamp on the polyrhythmic musical style.

On this tour, as is their custom, the group is joined by their American touring musicians. Matthew Engel on keys and backing vocals, Cody Jensen on percussion, Joshua Thomson on alto sax, Eddie Quiroga on trombone, and Dr. Adrian Barnett on tenor sax. Additionally, the band is lucky enough to feature Ms. Marga Mbande singing lead vocals, and lending her elegant stage presence to the band.

The band will be playing 9 dates in two weeks throughout the Midwest, so make sure and come check out their sizzling, dance-inducing live show as they are only in the U.S. once a year!

In this class, kids will be the ones cooking while parents help! Children will learn how to make Asian zoodles (zucchini noodles,) taco salad, pizza crust, garlic parmesan spaghetti squash, and peanut butter chocolate energy bites.

About the Artist: Natalie gets a little too excited about vegetables, but it hasn’t always been that way. After a childhood of eating very few vegetables, she gave up meat at 18 and suddenly had to learn how to cook (and like) them. Through a lot of trial and error, she taught herself to cook healthy food on a college budget and has since cooked extensively with vegetables and learned how to make them delicious. Instead of worrying about fad diets or constantly changing health advice, Natalie’s approach teaches you how to add more fruits, vegetables and whole grains to your diet. Her classes will help you be the person you believed you were when you bought all that produce.

The NOLA Jazz Band’s monthly “New Orleans Jazz Party” occurs every First Friday of the month at The Basement, usually to a packed house.

All band members have a common love for the sound and “feel” of both traditional and current New Orleans and roots blues music – real, gutsy, raw, heartfelt, and entertaining. They also find joy in their music and love performing together, having fun, and entertaining their audiences.

The NOLA Jazz Band has played alongside a number of well-known traditional jazz and music groups this past year including Davina & the Vagabonds, Sony recording artist trumpet player and singer Bria Skonberg, and Dom Flemons of The Carolina Chocolate Drops.

Individual band members have also shared the stage with Vincent Gardner, Maynard Ferguson, Benny Goodman, Kurt Elling, and many other well know jazz artists during their careers. NOLA Jazz Band members have also been inducted into the Iowa Jazz Hall of Fame, and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

CD’s are available at live shows, online at iTunes and CD Baby, on their website, as well as streaming on Spotify.
