Writing for Screen and Stage
Writing for the stage or screen is possibly the literary world’s most exciting undertaking, not complete until given life by the actors, directors, and technicians responsible for making theatre and film happen. Drawing from many theorists and practitioners (including Robert McKee, David Mamet, Michael Hauge and others). as well as his own experience, the instructor leads a course focusing on the craft of structuring story for maximum impact. Includes lecture/discussion and writing exercises designed to move the writer toward creating the sort of powerful plays and films that hold audiences riveted.

James Serpento is one of the founding members of Kingman Row Entertainment and has worked in the entertainment industry across the United States for more than three decades, with several hundred productions for stage and screen to his credit, many of them award-winning. A Resident Playwright Alumnus of both the renowned Chicago Dramatists and the Bloomington Playwrights Project, James is the author or co-author of more than fifty plays and screenplays, most of which have been professionally produced. He was a winner of the Bloomington Playwrights Project Playwriting Competition, the National Society of Arts and Letters Writers Competition, and was a finalist for the ABC/Disney Writers Fellowship, finishing in the top 1% of more than 4,000 competing writers. His NYC credits include Night Class and Of Weddings and Divorces (produced Off-Off Broadway as a winner of the American Theatre of Actors Playwriting Competition). In Chicago, his plays A Danse for My Sisterlie, Pasticcio, On the El Nightimes, The Doctor, Lazy Susan, and Private Passage (co-authored with Louise Bylicki) were well-received. James co-wrote (with Mark Gruber) A Pyg’s Eye, which had workshop production by the Repertory Theater of Iowa and Des Moines’ Salsbury House, and he also provided a freely adapted version of Chekhov’s The Ninny for RTI’s Love and Other Matters. He wrote the screenplays for all of the films he directed at AriesWorks Entertainment and he usually has several screenplays or spec teleplays in various stages of development. Among his recently completed screenplays are Dirty Money Island (an adaptation of the autobiography of Alf Freddie Clark), and The Beckoning of Bryn O’ Mara, a supernatural thriller written with Alissa Tschetter-Siedschlaw. He is currently at work on a Mob comedy-drama, The Princess of Chicago, as well as a web series.
