jazz-for-happy-194x300Every Friday evening, the Des Moines Social Club hosts the Jazz & Roots Happy Hour in The Basement.

 

Lead by Austin Brown, DTAB and the Dabs is a project based on playing with varying rhythm section players from around Iowa. The selections of music will be anything from standards, tunes written by influences, to originals.

 Austin Ellis Brown is an Iowa native musician. As a beginner musician, he started studying guitar with Robert Ankum, and continued to study with him throughout high school. Inspired by his experience with Mr. Ankum, he decided to study continue with his commitment to the guitar at the University of Northern Iowa. Austin studied with Bob Dunn and received his B.A. in Jazz Studies with an emphasis on guitar. During his time at UNI, he has played in the Jazz Panthers (lead by Dr. Robert Washut) and the award-winning Jazz I (lead by Chris Merz). He has shared the stage with Kenny Wheeler, Matt Wilson, and David Berkman. While in school, he was a member of the improvisational jazz & funk quintet Mary Mo and Her Sweet Notes. After having moved to Des Moines in 2013, Austin has been a key player in the scene. He has been a part of the following projects and groups: Jazz in a Funky Place (Greenwood Lounge), Geddions (led by Nick Leo), performed with Max Wellmen’s band, to name a few. Currently, Austin plays in the TTP Project and additional projects (Sovereign Souls, classical jazz duo) with his wife, Stephanie Marie Brown.
