DMSC Presents: Fall / Winter 2016

For our DMSC PRESENTS music series, we have curated an exciting line-up of culturally and musically diverse performers from all across the globe. Each show in the series will be an opportunity to broaden your horizons and enjoy a performance unlike anything you have seen or heard before.

Season tickets are on sale now! 10 shows. $10 each.
Individual tickets will go on sale July 19. Children 10 and under are free for every show with a paying adult.

We Banjo 3 from Galway, Ireland combine Irish Music with Old-Time American and Bluegrass influences to reveal the banjo’s rich legacy and roots.

An evening with Fendika
Fendika is a troupe of accomplished azmari musicians and dancers from Ethiopia. Fendika features six performers, including two dancers and a singer, and features authentic instruments including kebero drums, masenko (a one-stringed bowed fiddle), and krar (a five- or six-stringed lyre). Founded in 2009 by Melaku Belay, the world’s foremost interpreter of eskista, a traditional Ethiopian trance dance of athletic shoulder movements that presage hip hop movements of breaking and popping.

Former member of the CAROLINA CHOCOLATE DROPS, Dom Flemons is the “American Songster,” pulling from traditions of old-time folk music to create new sounds.

Malika Tirolien

Malika Tirolien is a Guadeloupean singer/songwriter, pianist and producer. Her music is a mix of Soul-jazz and R&B with caribbean influences and hip-hop flavours. She has shared the stage, opened for and/or recorded with: Snarky Puppy, Lalah Hathaway, N’Dambi, Alain Jean-Marie, Grégory Charles, Lara Fabian, Ruben Blades, Richard Bona and Steel Pulse.

An evening with The Bad Plus
The Bad Plus came together at the end of the 20th century and has avoided easy categorization ever since, winning critical hosannas and a legion of fans worldwide with their creativity, unique sound and flair for live performance. Based in New York City, the intensely collaborative trio has constantly searched for rules to break and boundaries to cross, bridging genres and techniques while exploring the infinite possibilities of three exceptional musicians working in perfect sync.

The inaugural DES MOINES JAZZ FESTIVAL will build on the emerging success of jazz in Des Moines. This will be a multi-venue, single day festival incorporating workshops, clinics, performances, and activities for all ages.
