The Bald Soprano/The Dumb Waiter, two one-act plays performed in tandem, directed by Zachary Mannheimer.

In The Bald Soprano, Eugene Lonesco throws together a cast of characters including the quintessential British middle-class family the Smiths, their guests the Martins, their maid Mary, and a fire chief determined to extinguish all fires — including their hearths. It’s an archetypical absurdist tale and Lonesco displays his profound take on the problems inherent in modern communication.

In Harold Pinter’s The Dumb Waiter, one of Off-Broadway’s most successful entries, this mysterious and moody study in suspense concerns two professional killers who wait apprehensively in a grubby, windowless basement room for word of their next macabre assignment.

Meet Me in St. Louis is a partnership with the Des Moines Onstage Children’s Theater. It’s rare for a play to capture truly a special moment in time, a particular moment in the lives of some real people. What makes Meet Me in St. Louis so exceptional is not only that it does this so beautifully but that it’s done with fun, excitement, and some broad comedy scenes that often stop the show with laughter! Four attractive sisters are all blazing with excitement over the wonderful World’s Fair that is about to open right there in St. Louis.

Page to Stage: Evolving Iowa
Wednesday, March 6 at 6:30pm
Des Moines Social Club, 400 Walnut St., Des Moines

Page to Stage is the Des Moines Social Club’s monthly play reading series. Generally the first Wednesday of the month we present a staged reading of a new play—either brand new, an obscure old find, or something new to Des Moines. The March Page to Stage is featuring “Evolving Iowa” – an Original Play by Bob Filippone.

About Evolving Iowa: Two households, both alike in dignity… Deep in the heart of “flyover country,” young lovers come together, but their relationship threatens to rip apart their families and community. Sarah and Gabe are schoolmates, but they might as well have come from different worlds. When they find each other, they also find an explosive clash of generations, of religious views, and of social values. “Evolving Iowa” explores the turmoil that hides beneath the surface of politeness in the land of casseroles and pheasant hunting. Will love triumph, or will fear and tradition lead to tragedy?
